The Wat (Temple) Don Chan Ethnic Minority Orphanage, located on the outskirts of Chiang Mai is home to some 470 ethnic minority orphans from northern Thailand.
The abbot founded the orphanage, a temple school, and has organised a level of vocational training for the orphans but struggles to fund the project and the prospects for the orphans without formal citizenship, even on graduating from the temple school, are bleak.
VWB (Voluntourists Without Borders) has offered to helped establish two projects on the temple land that will use voluntourist and orphanage labour, to provide ongoing and increasing revenue to cover cost of running the orphanage, the school and vocational training.
